Halfway up or halfway down?

It's official: I just waltzed over to Sproul Plaza & was issued a UC Berkeley photo ID. It features my name, staff ID, signature, university seal, mysterious bar code, mysterious magnetic strip, a big fat "A" to signify that mine is an academic appointment . . . and the requisite goofy photo.

I think I'm going to shave my beard. Or maybe my whole head.

Anyway, so I'm walking back toward the library when I see the big flagpole just below California Hall -- and I see that the U.S. and California Republic flags, in an apparent token of 9/11 mourning, are flying at half-mast. Or is it half-staff? Is there a difference?

Congratualtions on becoming "Berkeley Legal". You have always done significant things on significant days in history....looks like today is another one.
