Jason at Play

These are a few of my fa-vo-rite things...

Much of my free time is spent accumulating information: I read the New York Times and the Washington Post pretty much every day, and I spend many more hours each week soaking up the latest political, environmental, social, economic and scientific developments in our world. I'm usually taking this in with both my eyes (print & Web) and my ears (National Public Radio, mostly). When my ears aren't busy with NPR, I'm usually enjoying selections from my live music collection.

At the same time, I know I spend too much time indoors. And too much time away from the wild. Being out in nature is often a profoundly spiritual experience for me. There's really nothing else like it.

To explore various environments, you sometimes need different kinds of equipment. I have found low-impact, fun, exhilarating and efficient ways to move on land, water and deep snow.

  • Biking - There's just no better way to get around, and no better example of appropriate technology. I ride my bike to work and to school all year round. I usually get there faster and I can always find parking. (Got a bike? Join a Critical Mass bike ride & take back the streets!)
  • Kayaking - Cruising along the coast or gliding silently across quiet inland waters, kayaks are beautiful.
  • Snowshoeing - When the snows are too deep for hiking, I put on my snowshoes & off I go!

Other pastimes that make me smile:

  • Hiking & Camping - of course!
  • Hula-hooping - I make my own hoops & can often be found dancing about with several of them spinning around me. Would you like to see me hula-hooping? [269K]
  • Organic gardening - I apprenticed at a small organic vegetable farm a few years ago. I say there is nothing more satisfying than growing your own food. Good land is a gift...and sustainable agriculture is the way.
